A collection of essays by Schopenhauer on the perception of the importance of art, morality and self awareness in a blind struggle against a Godless, meaningless world radically transformed our understanding of the individual and remains a searing vision of the human condition.
One of the most iconoclastic thinkers of all time, Friedrich Nietzsche continues to challenge the boundaries of conventional religion and morality with his subversive theories of the 'superman', the individual will, the death of God and the triumph of an all-powerful human life force.
This is a translation of both volumes of Nietzsche's Human, All Too Human. The first volume appeared in 1878, just before Nietzsche abandoned his academic life. In 1886 it was republished, incorporating in a second volume two books of aphorisms which Nietzsche had published in the meantime. Subtitled 'A Book for Free Spirits', Human, All Too Human marked for Nietzsche a new 'positivism' and scepticism with which he challenged his previous metaphysical and psychological assumptions. Nearly all the themes of his later work are displayed here with characteristic perceptiveness and honesty, it remains one of the works fundamental for an understanding of his thought.
This was the first of Fontane's sixteen novels, most of which became classics of the realist genre. Set in Berlin, shortly before the Prussians rebelled against Napoleon, the novel resembles War and Peace. This World's Classics edition is the first and only available in Englishtranslation.
An entirely new translation of Nietzsche's fourth book, which falls in what is regarded as his "positivist" period. Especially notable for the advance it represents in his understanding of psychology.
The ancient Persian prophet Zarathustra descends from the mountains to tell the world that God is dead and that Superman, the human embodiment of divinity, is his successor. Nietzsche argues that the meaning of existence is not religious
New to Penguin Classics, The Will to Power contains some of Nietzsche's most
fascinating and combative writings on nihilism, metaphysics and the future of
Europe. Assembled by Nietzsche's sister after his death, The Will to Power is
a collection of the philosopher's reflections and theories taken from his
unpublished notebooks. Covering topics such as nihilism, Christianity,
morality, and the famous will to power, the book was controversially presented
as Nietzsche's all-but-completed magnum opus containing his philosophical
system. Including some of his most interesting metaphysical and
epistemological thoughts, as well as some of his most disturbing ethical and
political comments, the book would prove to have a significant influence on
Nietzsche's contentious reception in the twentieth century. For more than
seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in
the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics
represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across
genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative
texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and
contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning
translators.
