In the process of finding his lover, he explains how he adores architecture and gardens. This book narrates the novel, Hypnerotomachya Poliphili, through photographs of Italian gardens designed as stages on which the story of Poliphilo takes place. One walks around the gardens of the renaissance and sees the episodes of the story quietly performed through the fountains, sculptures and even the design and the layout of the gardens.

Barvité a košaté vyprávění je údajně dílem benediktinského mnicha, který je rozdělil do dvou částí: v té první sledujeme Poliphila bloudit temným lesem i záhadnými komnatami v klínu hor, kde ho navíc začne pronásledovat mohutný drak. Poliphilovi se podaří z jeho dosahu uniknout a rázem se ocitá v krajině nymf, jež mu přichystají i příjemné sexuální osvěžení. Po mnoha dalších peripetiích se konečně setká s Polií, s níž odplouvá na Venušin ostrov. V druhé části oproti první má hlavní slovo Polia. I ona vypráví svůj příběh, v němž po téměř zázračném uzdravení měla vstoupit do kláštera, nicméně Kupidův šíp jí od tohoto předsevzetí odradil... V čase prvního vydání se jednalo o neobvyklou knihu, kterou lze považovat za dobrodružný i milostný román, v němž ožívají pohanské tradice, erotická smyslnost, ale i úvahy o soudobé architektuře či odkazy na antickou literaturu.
