The first book to explore how cultural action - including minstrelsy, theatre, and popular literature - transformed public opinion and political structures. Taking the North's rallying cry as his title, John Brooke shows how the course of history was forever changed.

      There Is a North
    • This is the account of a summer journey of over four thousand kilometres by motorbike from Nice, on the Mediterranean coast of France, to the North Cape of Norway, Europe's most northern extremity, a headland surrounded by the Arctic Ocean. Equipped with a small tent, the author camped until he had crossed the Arctic Circle, using thereafter the wooden cabins that are to be found in the north of Scandinavia. The author has tried to convey the pleasures of this form of exploration and has given his thoughts to those who may wish to follow, whether on a motorbike or other form of transport, or from the comfort of their own home.

      The North Cape
    • Nowhere is England more like herself than in the county of the Severn and the Thames; Arthur Mee Double Gloucester celebrates this originality, and here in microcosm is the rich history of Gloucestershire. From that base, it reaches out to celebrate the poetry and music associated with the county-from Ivor Gurney to Gustav Holst. In all of this there is, if only by default, an essentially moral message, because Gloucestershire's motto is 'prorsum semper', meaning 'ever upright'. John Hedley has crafted a detailed and thought-provoking history of the county in this deftly-written play, offering snapshots of Gloucester's history through the people who lived there, and how they lived.

      Double Gloucester
    • This book relates the experiences of a doctor, who, after nearly half a century of medical practice in Europe became a volunteer doctor, working with Médecins Sans Frontières, (Doctors without Borders), treating young children with severe malaria in rural Chad, one of the most isolated and poorest parts of the African continent. The author describes the route he followed from his first inclination to work in this field to the time of his arrival in Africa. An Africa whose evolution is described from pre-colonial days to the present time. Whilst giving details of the many facets of malaria, the author portrays the country and the people of Chad with whom he lived and worked, a people for whom his respect increased with each passing day.

      Seven Months in Rural Chad
    • Why do we travel? For the most part, we travel to arrive, but with the travels of the Sheena-Rosa, there is a fusion between travelling and arriving. Whether a few miles off-shore or harboured in a sheltered port, the experience is a continuum. From the sea, one observes the land, its contours and its mountains – a view that has little changed from the landscape our ancestors would have seen. Then as we draw nearer, the features on this landscape appear, and the influence of man becomes more and more apparent.

      Voyage in Italy
    • This book explains, in non-technical terms, the relationship between man and the many bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms with whom he lives in the most intimate manner throughout his existence. It is explained that for the most part, this coexistence is beneficial, but that through evolution and natural selection, some bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms may become aggressive to the host in which they live and that others may become aggressive as a result of mutation through other species. This aggressiveness manifests itself through the diseases which afflict man and all that is living. The cause and nature of those diseases which have been most devastating for human society and which have greatly influenced the course of history are portrayed in this book, as are the means by which the spread of infections may be controlled before they progress to become epidemics and pandemics.
