Uczył się rysunku w Miluzie, Angouleme i Strasbourgu. Przez piętnaście lat pracował w reklamie. Pierwszy komiks opublikował w 1993 roku. W 1998 roku ukazało się Kilka dni lata, trzy lata później Wysepka szczęścia. Oba komiksy nagrodzono na festiwalu w Angouleme. W następnych latach tworzył kolejne tytuły, powieści graficzne, zbiory nowelek oraz adaptacje literatury (Jack London, Herman Melville). Chabout zyskał popularność i zdobył liczne nagrody. W Polsce ukazały się trzy komiksy: Czyściec, Samotnik i Henri Dsir Landru. Artysta głównie tworzy komiksy czarno-białe, opierając opowiadanie historii na rysunkach. Inspiruje się i podziwia tworczość Didiera Comesa, Jacquesa Tardi, Jos Munoza i Alberto Brecci.
