Ils sont menés par Gabriel Bagradian, cet enfant du pays, expatrié, naguère vilipendé pour ses moeurs occidentales, mais qui, contre toute attente, refuse de fuir et choisit de lier son destin à celui du peuple de la montagne. Ecrit pendant la montée du nazisme, le roman, inspiré par un fait réel, connut un immense retentissement. Il ouvrait les yeux du monde sur le génocide arménien et établissait un lien entre ce dernier et l’idéologie nazie. Interdit par Hitler (à la demande des Turcs), détruit au cours d’autodafés, le livre continua de circuler sous le manteau dans tous les ghettos où les juifs s’identifiaient aux résistants arméniens.

The Song of Bernadette is considered one of the twentieth century's greatest novels of triumphant religious faith. How the book came to be written is itself an inspirational and even miraculous story. In 1940, famed Austrian author Franz Werfel and his wife were on a desperate flight from the Nazi invaders, whom Franz had publicly denounced. Repeatedly thwarted in their attempts to cross the French border, they found temporary refuge in Lourdes, home of the famous shrine where Bernadette received visions of the Virgin Mary and where millions come in faith to seek a miracle. Werfel became fascinated with Bernadette's story and began to visit the sacred grotto every day, swearing that, should he and his wife be granted escape from the Nazis, he would write the story of Bernadette for all the world. Franz's prayers were answered, and in America he wrote his masterpiece, The Song of Bernadette, a beautiful fusion of faith and craft.

This story is about a long suppressed love triangle between Leonidas Tachezy, a high-level Austrian career bureaucrat, his younger, trophy wife Amelie, and a Jewish woman from his past, Vera Wormser, with whom he'd fallen in love when she was fourteen. After his marriage, Leonidas encounters Vera in a German university town where she is studying philosophy. He makes a promise that implies marriage, but drops out of her life entirely to return to a comfortable existence until one day when a letter arrives, addressed with Vera's unmistakable handwriting in pale blue ink. Like Humbert Humbert in Lolita, Leonidas explains his "crime" against Vera to an imaginary courtroom in a way that anticipates Nabokov.

Životní příběh starozákonního proroka Jeremiáše byl a zůstává stále i naléhavým varováním před všemi podobami osobního a společenského násilí. Tak jej chápal i slavný pražský rodák Franz Werfel (1890–1945) ve svém románu o těžké úloze této velké biblické postavy, Román vznikal pod vlivem tíživých událostí v Německu roku 1936, a to umocňovalo působnost dávného Jeremiášova poslání. Přestože již v roce 1933 byly v Německu spáleny všechny Werfelovy spisy, neváhal se svým novým dílem postavit sílící totalitní nacistické praxi a vůbec všem, pro něž byla vždy prvořadou jejich vlastní moc. Ve Werfelově pohledu se tak postava babylonského krále Nabukadnezara stávala snadno srovnatelnou s osobou Adolfa Hitlera, utrpení proroka Jeremiáše s utrpením Židů či zničením Jeruzaléma a jeho Chrámu roku 586 př. Kr., apokalyptickým obrazem budoucnosti Evropy ohrožené nacismem. I dnes si vynikající Werfelovo dílo zachovává svou aktuálnost. Vždyť totalitní myšlení nijak nevymizelo ze světového dění, jen jeho metody mění svou tvář.

Najúspešnejší román Franza Werfela sa zaraďuje do klenotnice svetovej literatúry. Je napísaný podľa skutočnej udalosti. Autor verne a príťažlivo približuje čitateľovi celú atmosféru v Lurdoch, celý začiatok a priebeh zjavení. Chudobnému dievčaťu z pyrenejského údolia Bernadete Soubirousovej sa zjaví pri massabiellskej jaskyni Pani, ktorá ju poverí určitým poslaním. Kým sa uskutoční, musí Bernadeta zniesť veľa príkoria. Zvíťazí však jej nezlomná viera, ktorá spolu s čistotou jej srdca presvedčí cirkevné i svetské vrchnosti, ktoré nakoniec uznajú zjavenia Panny Márie za pravé a vytrysknutý prameň vody za zázračne uzdravujúci.
