Predrag Matvejevic ist ein Liebender, ein Sänger, der seinen Gegenstand, das Mittelmeer, erfahren, erforscht, erreist und erlebt hat. Und so kommt sein Buch daher: eine leidenschaftliche Erzählung von exaktem und von archaischem Wissen, von seltenen Worten und den großen historischen, philosophischen und literarischen Werken, deren Inspirationsquelle der 'Mediterran' gewesen ist. Vor dem Leser entstehen "Geschichte und Raum" (Fernaud Braudel): Matvejevic besingt diesen "Meereskomplex" mit der Hingabe und Erinnerung des Liebenden, mit der Nüchternheit des Wissenschaftlers.§ In drei großen Kapiteln nähert sich Matvejevic seinem Gegenstand von je anderer Warte aus. Einmal das 'Brevier', das in einer fließenden, musikalisch-literarischen Sprache gehalten ist und die einzelnen Themen versammelt: Städte, Häfen, Inseln, Wellen, Winde, Buchten, Meerengen, Sprachen, Schiffahrt, Fischerei, Flüsse, Völker, Seeschlachten und vieles mehr. Balkánští vládci, vojenští velitelé a „mírotvorci": Franjo Tudjman, Alija Izetbegovič a Slobodan Miloševič, pohledem tří spisovatelů tří národností. Na základě popisu životních osudů a charakterů jednotlivých vládců sledují autoři cesty „strůjců války" k moci, jejich chování během války i mírových jednání. Autor Predrag Matvejević, charvatský literární vědec přednášející o kultuře Středomoří na římské univerzitě La Sapienza, spojil ve svém eseji množství odborných znalostí s inspirací vpravdě básnickou. První oddíl jeho knihy, vlastní Breviář, se zabývá středomořskými skutečnostmi i chimérami, městy a přístavy, pevninou a ostrovy, ostrovany a přístavními velitelstvími, bójemi a lanovím, hřbitovy a vymřelými jazyky, vlnami a větry, mořskými proudy a oblaky na nebi, svítáním a soumrakem, zálivy a jeskyněmi, prameny a studnami, majáky a kláštery, rybáři a racky, druhy půdy a nářečí, středomořskými nadávkami a kletbami, mírámi a váhami, tržnicemi a solnicemi, výrobou oleje i sudů, dehtem a konopím, pletením lan i vázáním uzlů, plaváním i potápěním, pohřbíváním v moři, lovem hub a korálů, řekami a jejich ústím, fíkovníky a olivovníky, jednotlivými přímořskými národy sídlícími kol dokola Středomoří a jejich zeměni, Apeninským a Balkánským poloostrovem, námořními bitvami atd. Druhý, nejmenší oddíl, nazvaný Mapy, se věnuje plavbě a poznávání moře a přímoří od nejstarších dějin do současnosti. Třetí oddíl - Glosář - pátrá po původu různých pojmů a proměnách jejich chápání v průběhu staletí. V závěru je také řeč o knihách, které jsou zasvěceny poznávání Středomoří.

Književnici u egzilu, Predrag Matvejević i Vidosav Stevanović, te novinar Zlatko Dizdarević, dobitnik uglednih svjetskih nagrada iz područja novinarstva, u svojim političkim ogledima daju oštre komentare dramatičnih događaja koji su pratili propast Jugoslavije, nemilosrdno obrušavajući oštrice svojih pera na tri protagonista ovih krvavih previranja tijekom 90-tih: Franju Tuđmana, Slobodana Miloševića i Aliju Izetbegovića.

Predrag Matvejevic erzählt nicht vom banalen Venedig, es ist nicht das Venedig der Brücken und Kanäle, und es sind nicht die Gondeln und die Katzen, die er beschreibt. Er entführt uns in ein geheimnisvolles Venedig, das von Feuchtigkeit beschlichene, von Rost und Patina überzogene, in dem unbekannte, duftende und geheimnisvolle Pflanzen sprießen und Möwen auf Friedhöfen Ruhe suchen und in den Lagunen ihre letzte Ruhe finden. Das andere Venedig verführt uns und berichtet vom Schicksal der Pfähle aus Eichen-, Kastanien- und Mandelholz, von istrischen Samen, dem Leinkraut, das »wie andere verwandte Arten wohl gemeinsam mit dem weißen istrischen Stein hierhergebracht« wurde. Eine Erzählung, die uns in den Stein horchen lässt, wo man hinter den Molen Unerwartetes findet und zögert, wenn man in Friedhöfen auf bekannte Namen trifft oder Gräser emporsprießen sieht, von denen man nicht angenommen hat, sie hier zu schauen.
