Autobiografie vznikla v úzké spolupráci s jeho přítelem Normanem Thomasem di Giovannim, který se dlouhodobě věnoval překladu Borgesova díla do angličtiny. Di Giovanni si uvědomil, že čtenáři často postrádají kontext, v němž je Borgesovo psaní zakořeněno, a proto se snažil, aby se Borges držel stanovených témat.
