Peter Altenberg (1859-1919) gilt als der prototypische Wiener Kaffeehausliterat. Zeit seines Lebens verfasste er nur kurz Prosaskizzen in einem ebenso eleganten wie gelassen-impressionistischen Stil, die in ihrer Gesamtheit jedoch ein Sittengemälde der Wiener Gesellschaft vor dem 1. Weltkrieg ergeben. Zu seinen Bewunderern gehörte u. a. Karl Kraus, der 1896 wesentlichen Anteil an der Veröffentlichung dieser ersten Zusammenstellung von Altenbergs Texten hatte.
