"Controversial in both life and art, Francis Bacon was one of the most important painters of the twentieth century. His monumental, unsettling images have an extraordinary power to disturb, shock, and haunt the spectator, "to unlock the valves of feeling and therefore return the onlooker to life more violently".Eminent writer and curator David Sylvester provides the definitive account of the career of an artist whose friend and collaborator he was for more than forty years. Drawing on his unparalleled personal knowledge of Bacon's inspirations and intentions, he first offers a critical overview of the development of Bacon's work from 1933 to the early 1990s, and then addresses its crucial aspects. Sylvester also reproduces previously unpublished extracts from his celebrated conversations with Bacon in which the artist speaks about himself, modern painters, and the art of the past. Finally, he gives a brief account of Bacon's life, correcting errors that elsewhere have been presented as facts.Accompanying the incisive and revealing text are reproductions of almost every Bacon work discussed, including twelve triptych fold-outs. The most complete work on Bacon yet, this book constitutes a portrait of one of the creative geniuses of our age by a writer of comparable distinction.

The retrospective exhibition of Magritte's work organized by curator David Sylvester at the Tate Gallery in 1969 prompted the Menil Foundation, Texas, to invite him to produce a catalogue raisonne of Magritte, and also this monograph. Sylvester's treatment of the artist's life depicts the ironies of a career full of disappointment, explores his chequered relationship with his dealers, and reveals the realities of a legendary marriage. Its analysis of the work combines discussion of individual pieces with examination of the artist's obsessions and attitudes.

The Belgian painter René Magritte (1898-1967) was an outstanding figure in the Surrealist movement and is surely one of this century's major artists. Since the 1960s his work has had a massive and continuing influence, not only on art, but on the imagery of popular culture. Following the publication to critical acclaim of the first three volumes of René Magritte : Catalogue Raisonné, Volume Four, written by Sarah Whitfield and Michael Raeburn, presents a systematic survey of Magritte's works in water-based media (gouaches, temperas, watercolours and papiers collés) of 1918-1967. Maintaining the structure established in Volumes I, II and III, an illustrated detailed chronology of the artist's career precedes 570 illustrated entries which discuss the dating, genesis and history of each work. Substantial extracts are included from Magritte's largely unpublished correspondence, given in both original French and English translation. In addition, there follows an appendix consisting of untraced works of which there is no photographic record. The subsequent volume, to be published in 1995, contains an annotated bibliography, supplement and indices. Volumes III and IV are by Sarah Whitfield and Michael Raeburn. All five volumes are edited by David Sylvester.
Kniha rozhovorů s Francisem Baconem. Francis Bacon (1909–1992) zvolil v třiceti pěti letech, uprostřed poválečných vln op-artu, monochronní malby a konceptuálního umění, návrat k tradiční technice, k postavám a dějům. Bacon – piják, hráč a divoch – velmi přesně a dopodrobna analyzuje pozadí umělecké tvorby.
