S termínem "reformace" přitom autor zachází velmi opatrně a programově se vymezuje proti některým zkreslujícím interpretacím problematiky: nesouhlasí s běžným výkladem, že by špatná představa křesťanství byla v tomto období nahrazena představou lepší, reformaci chápe jako "událost" zasahující do konkrétních lidských životů. Všímá si nejen doktrín - např. zajímavým způsobem vykládá změny v interpretaci Posledního soudu a Kristovy oběti - ale také rituálů, institucí a typických praktik, např. poutnictví.
