Tento retrospektivní pohled na éru socialismu v Lotyšské SSR je považován za jeden z nejvýraznějších lotyšských románů posledních let. Bankovskis v něm odhaluje, jaký byl svět za železnou oponou v letech 1978-1989: zmatek plný fám, bolesti, úzkosti a nesmyslnosti. Setkáváme se tu s věčně opilým básníkem Harijsem Miķelsonsem, který se s úmyslem vylepšit svůj kádrový profil stane konfidentem sovětské tajné policie, s vysloužilým generálem, jenž z neznámých důvodů spáchá sebevraždu a svůj dům odkáže právě Miķelsonovi, s nadějnou plavkyní Evou Kallasovou, prožívající nenaplněný románek se západoněmeckým špiónem Jorenem, který nemá ponětí o tom, pro koho pracuje a jaký užitek vlastně jeho špionáž má. Tak zaczyna się opowieść o fikcyjnym miasteczku snuta ustami jej mieszkańców. Chochmy nie ma na mapie, a jednocześnie jest wszędzie tam, gdzie postkomunistyczna historia odcisnęła swoje piętno. Tutaj może zdarzyć się nawet najbardziej absurdalna rzecz, a przy tym wszystko jest prawdziwe i można by o tym przeczytać w codziennej prasie.
