This text describes Gurdjieff's cosmology from Ouspensky's perspective as student, and shows how Ouspensky's formulation of his own ideas eventually led to his break with Gurdjieff. The book conveys a strong and lasting impression that not only did Ouspensky discover a real knowledge about man and his relationship with the universe, but that a practical cosmic teaching for the conduct of life is even now in existence.

In 1915, abstract mathematician P.D. Ouspensky met George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff, whose search for truth had led him to formulate a modern synthesis of logic and mysticism based on ancient esoteric knowledge. This is the record of Ouspensky's eight years of work as Gurdjieff's pupil.
Po řadě vydaných próz z 50. a 60. let, které měly Arno Schmidta (1914–1979) představit českému čtenáři již v poněkud vyzrálejší podobě, přicházejí další texty z počátku 60. let, v nichž jsou patrné typické stylistické zvláštnosti a autorův osobitý přístup k jazyku. V kratších rozmarných textech plných nápadů Schmidt bohatě využívá rozmanitých gagů, triků, vtipu a slovních hříček doprovázených jeho neodmyslitelným sarkasmem.
Tři „antické“ prózy Arno Schmidta (1914–1979) Gadir aneb Poznej sám sebe (1948), Alexandr aneb Co je pravda (1949) a Enthymesis aneb J. V. N. (Jak vás nenávidím, 1946) navazují na první vydání Schmidtových próz Leviatan (Opus 2011) tohoto pozoruhodného německého autora. Ve všech třech prózách Arno Schmidt pohlíží na antické události kritickýma očima, jako by historickým pramenům nedůvěřoval a ptal se, kdo nám vlastně ony události zprostředkoval a z které doby jsou prameny, jež považujeme za hodnověrné, při tom se pokouší o další možné pohledy, než jaké nám jsou obecně předkládány. „Der Vierte Weg“ ist eine zentrale Quelle für die Weisheit von Georges I. Gurdjieff, zusammengestellt aus den Vorlesungen von Peter D. Ouspensky, dem wichtigsten Vermittler von Gurdjieffs Lehren.
