Intensive Beziehungen zwischen Schwestern oder Mädchen sind das Leitthema der in „Schwestern“ miteinander verflochtenen Erzählungen. Gleichzeitig zeichnet diese Sammlung persönliche und politische Narrative der Ukraine nach. Das Mädchen Daryna, Protagonistin der ersten beiden Erzählungen, wächst in der sowjetischen Unterdrückung auf. In „Schwester, Schwester“ wird aus der Perspektive eines ungeborenen Kindes über die Tragik nicht-realisierter Lebensmöglichkeiten reflektiert. Ihre Schwester erzählt in „Die Mädchen“ über sexuelle Erfahrungen und verknüpft damit Genderfragen und soziale Rollenbildern in der sowjetischen und postsowjetischen Ukraine. Von einem Volksmärchen inspiriert ist „Die Schneeballflöte“. Eine solche wird zur Stimme der Gerechtigkeit in den seelischen Abgründen zweier Schwestern und verwirft dabei das Stereotyp von Schuld und Sühne. In „Ich. Milena“ löst sich die Identität einer zunehmend schizophrenen Fernsehmoderatorin in einem medialen Hyperraum auf.Oksana Sabuschko, die wichtigste ukrainische Autorin der Gegenwart, schreibt mit frappierender Offenheit aus einer alltäglichen Realität, die „zu viel Geschichte für einen Quadratmeter“ enthält.
