V následujícím procesu, který se protáhl do roku 1312, se střetly zájmy francouzského panovníka s autoritou papežství. Na nátlak francouzské strany byl na koncilu ve Vienne papežem Klementem V. řád zrušen a jeho majetek přiznán johanitům. Francouzský král posléze získal obrovskou sumu jako náhradu za výdaje spojené s procesem. Čelní představitele řádu byli roku 1314 odsouzeni na doživotí, velmistr Jakub z Molay a preceptor v Normandii, Geoffrey ze Charney, skončili téhož roku jako zatvrzelí kacíři na hranici.
