La "sauvage et lointaine Europe" attend l'An Mil, espérant le retour du fils de Dieu. À Tanger, le riche négociant juif Ben-Attar embarque avec ses deux épouses, son associé musulman et un rabbin engagé en Andalousie. Leur voyage les mène, par la Seine, à Paris, où Ben-Attar souhaite faire comparaître son neveu Aboulafia devant un tribunal juif pour résoudre un conflit familial. La veuve Esther-Attar, épouse d'Aboulafia, exige que celui-ci mette fin à sa relation commerciale avec son oncle, qu'elle méprise pour sa bigamie. Le jugement à Paris ne satisfait personne, et la caravane se dirige vers Worms pour un second procès. Ce périple, de Worms à Paris puis de retour à Tanger, transforme profondément les juifs du Sud, tout comme ceux du Nord qu'ils ont côtoyés. Ce roman d'aventures coloré et riche se lit également comme une parodie de récit picaresque et un roman d'initiation. Il explore les relations humaines au-delà de l'exclusivité, tout en offrant une réflexion ambitieuse sur la double ascendance culturelle du judaïsme, enrichie d'une symbolique complexe et d'une documentation historique fouillée.
