'Intellectual Entertainments' consists of eight philosophical dialogues, each with five participants, some living, some imaginary and some dead. The dialogues take place either in Elysium or in an imaginary Oxford Common Room. Each historical figure speaks in his own idiom with a distinctive turn of phrase. The imaginary figures speak in the accent and idiom of their respective countries (English, Scottish, American, Australian). The themes are the nature of the mind and the relation between mind and body; the nature of consciousness and its demystification; the nature of thought and its relation to speech; and the objectivity or subjectivity of perceptual qualities such as colour, sound, smell, taste and warmth. Each participant presents a different point of view and defends his position against the arguments of the others. No philosophical knowledge is presupposed.

Autor, americký diplomat, prináša vlastnú interpretáciu oficiálnych jednaní aj neformálnych diplomatickýchstretnutí, na ktorých sa osobne zúčastnil. V knihe nechýba subjektívny pohľad na udalosti a osobností, ktoré sa podieľali na rozdelení federácie. Dôležité je, že dokázal zachovať odstup, nevyhnutný pre dielo, ktoré si robí ambície stať sa objektívnym dokumentom o dobe, v ktorej sa rozhodovalo o budúcnosti Slovenska a jeho obyvateľov.

Paul Hacker bol prvý americký diplomat, ktorý pôsobil v Bratislave po revolúcii v novembri 1989. Narodil sa v New Yorku v roku 1946. Je absolventom City College v New Yorku a Columbia University, kde v roku mu v roku 1976 udelili titul Ph.D. v politológii. V rokoch 1973 – 2003 pôsobil v diplomatických službách v rôznych krajinách, napr. vo Švédsku, Fínsku, na Cypre, v Bulharsku, na Ukrajine a inde. Do Bratislavy prišiel na jeseň 1989 s úlohou vybudovať americké zastupiteľstvo na Slovensku. Ako priamy účastník zažil porevolučnú eufóriu i zložitý proces rozdelenia federácie a prvé chvíle existencie samostatnej Slovenskej republiky. Zo Slovenska odišiel v lete 1993. Je ženatý, otec syna Alexa. Nenahraditeľné individuálne svedectvo o prelomových časoch Československa a Slovenska v rokoch 1990–1993. Pripomína čitateľom historky, ktoré už zväčša upadli do zabudnutia. Niektoré z nich sú mrazivé a ukazujú, kam Slovenská republika smerovala pod vládou Mečiarovej garnitúry. Niektoré tváre, napríklad vtedajší predseda parlamentu a dnešný prezident Ivan Gašparovič, sú dodnes na slovenskej politickej scéne živo prítomné. Ich vtedajšie správanie len dokresľuje ich dnešné konanie: nezmenili sa. Martin Bútora 1. januára 1993 som podobne ako tisícky Slovákov odvážne mrzol na Námestí SNP, Times Square Bratislavy. Prebiehala tu oslava Nového roku so zvláštnym nádychom. Kým od skorého rána mnohí Slováci oslavovali vznik nového štátu, pre iných znamenalo rozdelenie krajiny veľkú tragédiu a cítili sa asi tak ako Kalifornčania, keby sa oddelili od zvyšku Spojených štátov a ocitli sa v novej zemi s hranicami v Skalnatých horách. Die Studienarbeit analysiert das schwankhafte Mär "Das Nonnenturnier", das um 1430 entstand und die skurrile Geschichte eines Ritters erzählt, der in zahlreiche amouröse Abenteuer verwickelt ist. Nachdem er eine Beziehung ablehnt, erhält er von einer Dame den drastischen Rat, sich seinen Penis zu entfernen, um Ehre und Ansehen zu erlangen. Dies führt zu einem absurden Disput mit seinem zagel, der schließlich vom Ritter getrennt wird. Die Arbeit beleuchtet die Themen von Ehre, Geschlechterrollen und die groteske Darstellung von Männlichkeit in der mittelalterlichen Literatur.

Die 25. Aventiure behandelt die Reise der Burgunden zum Hof Etzels, die durch Hochwasser der Donau erschwert wird. Hagen sucht einen Fährmann und trifft auf zwei Meerfrauen, Hadeburg und Sigelind, denen er heimlich die Kleider stiehlt. Im Austausch für ihre Kleider bieten sie ihm eine Prophezeiung über den Ausgang ihrer Reise an. Diese Episode beleuchtet die Verbindung zwischen Mensch und übernatürlichem Wesen sowie die Themen Schicksal und List in der mittelalterlichen Literatur.

50 Jahre Zweites Vatikanisches Konzil: Die Einschätzungen über dessen Auswirkungen heute stehen sich diametral gegenüber. Die einen preisen euphorisch den „neuen Aufschwung“ und die „Öffnung zur Welt“ – die anderen sehen ein unaufhaltsames Abdriften in Verweltlichung und Substanzverlust. In den Jahren, in denen die Weichenstellung erkennbar wurde, haben nur ganz wenige vorausschauend und warnend ihre Stimme erhoben. Vielleicht der scharfsinnigste und prägnanteste Beobachter und Kritiker dieser bis heute wirksamen und sich immer spürbarer auswirkenden Entwicklung war der Münsteraner Hochschullehrer Professor Dr. Paul Hacker (1913-1979), den eine (durchaus nicht immer ungetrübte!) Freundschaft mit dem damaligen Theologie-professor Joseph Ratzinger verband. Die in diesem Buch vorgelegten theologischen Aufsätze Paul Hackers zeugen von seinem „vulkanischen Temperament“ (das Ratzinger ihm attestierte), vor allem aber auch von seiner Spiritualität, in der akribische Wissenschaft sich mit mystischem Tiefgang vereint. Der Herausgeber Dr. Rudolf Kaschewsky war in den frühen 60er Jahren Schüler Paul Hackers und von 1983 bis 2009 Schriftleiter der UNA VOCE KORRESPONDENZ, in der viele wegweisende Aufsätze von Paul Hacker erschienen sind.
