The Great Flood and Other Stories from a River City

      • 188pages
      • 7 heures de lecture

This collection features columns and stories from the early 1980s by investigative journalist Dan Luzadder, who wrote for the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel. It includes his reflections and reporting on life in a historic river city, particularly during the Pulitzer-winning coverage of The Great Flood in spring 1982. This disaster garnered national attention, prompting President Ronald Reagan's visit as thousands were displaced in a fierce battle against the flood-of-the-century. The collection also covers significant events that shaped the community, such as the 1980 shooting of civil rights leader Vernon Jordan and the miraculous survival of a Fort Wayne man lost in the Bermuda Triangle for three days. Luzadder recounts a visit from humanitarian Mother Teresa to this 'city of churches,' along with everyday stories that capture the essence of the time and place. The News-Sentinel, where Luzadder worked before pursuing investigative reporting and freelance writing, is now part of the city’s history, having succumbed to the decline of the newspaper industry after over 150 years of chronicling local life. The collection is edited by Hannah Cowden and features a cover design by artist Michael Luzadder. The author is also known for his upcoming work on American journalism and the CIA, set for release in 2024.
