En 1908, Howard Carter est appelé à Thèbes pour assister un collectionneur passionné d'archéologie, mais encore inexpérimenté qui réalise sans grand succès toute une série de recherches : il s'agit de lord Carnarvon qui trouve en lui un expert précieux et un véritable ami. Carter de son côté rencontre l'appui solide et affectueux d'un généreux mécène qui ne va cesser de lui apporter aide et encouragements. C'est en sa compagnie qu'il va vire " en direct " le 5 novembre 1922 dans la Vallée des Rois, l'un des plus grands événements de toute l'histoire de l'archéologie, la découverte de la tombe de Toutankhamon.
