Children's stories about Uncle Lubin.

Children's stories about Uncle Lubin.
First published in 1937, this work is the second in the 'How to…' series, exploring various aspects of married life, from finding a wife to growing old together, with witty text and illustrations by Heath Robinson and K.R.G. Browne. Robinson faced teasing for his choice of subject, yet romance and courtship had long been his focus, evident in earlier works like ‘Cupid’ and ‘Stolen Kisses.’ This book reflects the significant changes in marital relationships between the wars, humorously addressing the challenges men faced during the depression, the absence of servants, and the rise of the confident modern woman. Women also struggled with housework until the advent of appliances like washing machines and vacuum cleaners in the 1930s, a shift captured in Robinson's imaginative illustrations. His inventive solutions include a super-de-luxe coffee maker resembling a modern espresso machine and gadgets for childcare. Ultimately, the authors suggest that tolerance, compromise, and helpfulness are essential traits of a perfect husband, ensuring he earns a reputation for thoughtfulness. For those who enjoy gardening, driving, or golf, the authors offer additional titles that entertain and inform. All works include a Foreword by Geoffrey Beare, Trustee of the William Heath Robinson Trust, who is establishing a museum in North London.
W. Heath Robinson is best known for his hilarious drawings of zany contraptions, though his work ranged across a wide variety of topics covering many aspects of British life in the decades following the First World War. Starting out as a watercolour artist, he quickly turned to the more lucrative field of book illustration and developed his forte in satirical drawings and cartoons. He was regularly commissioned by the editors of Tatler and The Sketch and in great demand from advertising companies. Collections of his drawings were subsequently published in many different editions and became so successful as to transform Heath Robinson into a household name, celebrated for his eccentric brand of British humour. The perfect antidote to the estate agent s property description, this book, with illustrations by Heath Robinson and a witty commentary by K.R.G. Browne, shows you how to prove there is room to swing a cat in your living-room and offers many inventive space-saving solutions, such as the Combination Bath and Writing Desk for Business Men, the Bed Dining-table and the Dresser-Piano . "
This volume emphasizes Heath Robinson’s later works and the ‘solemn innocents’ at the heart of his Improvisation drawings – those based on ingenuity rather than machinery. Alongside 79 cartoons, it offers a commentary that places his work in context.
