John Michael Cohen fut un traducteur prolifique de littérature européenne vers l'anglais. Il lança sa carrière de traducteur avec la première traduction en anglais des poèmes de Boris Pasternak, alors inconnu en dehors de l'Union soviétique. Son travail de traduction fut salué par d'éminentes figures littéraires. Cohen joua un rôle déterminant dans le Boom latino-américain des années 1960 en traduisant des œuvres d'auteurs majeurs et en les faisant connaître aux lecteurs anglophones. Outre son vaste travail de traduction et de rédaction, il fut également auteur d'ouvrages de critique littéraire et de biographies.
