Večer 10. května 1933 vzplály po celém Německu hranice. Shořely na nich knihy Marxe, Manna, Brechta, Hemingwaye a dalších spisovatelů, kteří prý ztělesňovali dekadentní životní styl Výmarské republiky. V skrytu za plápolajícími plameny se však odehrával další, méně známý příběh. Příběh o tom, jak nacisté na okupovaných územích vyrabovali tisíce knihoven a nakradli miliony knih. Velitel SS Heinrich Himmler a ideolog nacistické strany Alfred Rosenberg sváděli pomyslný boj o to, kdo uchvátí větší kus evropského literárního dědictví. Himmler shromáždil obrovskou sbírku knih o „nepřátelích říše“, Rosenberg šel ještě dál – chtěl vytvořit nacistický systém výzkumu a vzdělávání. Ten by vychovával budoucí elity třetí říše a ospravedlňoval vyvražďování Židů, Romů a politických nepřátel. Anders Rydell se vydal po stopách těchto Zlodějů knih. V honu za ztracenými velkými institucionálními i drobnými soukromými knihovnami procestoval Evropu křížem krážem a pátral po osudu knih, které byly pro své majitele a komunity čtenářů nenahraditelné. A stejně jako oni, ani mnohé z těchto knihoven válku nepřežily.
