Kniha zkoumá mezilidské vztahy a vzorce chování v letech 1937 až 1938 v Sovětském svazu, tedy v období velkého teroru. Na osudech jednotlivých zaměstnanců tří velkých moskevských továren autorka ukazuje, jak masové operace (zatýkání určitých skupin obyvatel) a výzvy vedoucích představitelů komunistické strany k odhalování „skrytých nepřátel“ uvedly do pohybu dynamiku teroru, před jehož destruktivní silou nakonec nebyl nikdo v bezpečí.
Záplavy udání a štvanice na „maskované záškodníky“ vytvořily z běžného pracovního prostředí past, do které se mohl chytit kdokoliv. Bez ohledu na důkazy či loajalitu vůči straně. Obvinění na základě společenských vazeb pak rozšiřovala počet postižených o rodinné příslušníky, spolupracovníky a známé.
Autorka sice nezpochybňuje zodpovědnost politických elit v čele s J. V. Stalinem, zároveň ale ukazuje, že „obyčejní lidé“ nebyli pouze oběťmi teroru. Řevnivost mezi jednotlivými pracovníky, osobní konflikty i obranné strategie, jako např. preventivní udávání, naopak pomáhaly roztáčet kola teroru a po jistou dobu znemožňovaly z něj nalézt jakékoliv východisko. Goldmanová tak prostřednictvím příběhů konkrétních lidí přesvědčivě polemizuje s totalitaristickým pojetím – v českém prostředí stále populárním – rozdělujícím společnost stalinské (či obecně komunistické) diktatury na aktivní ovládající a pasivní ovládané.
