The Husák government that came into power after the suppression of the Prague Spring formulated the goal of restoring „normality“ in Czechoslovakia. It revoked prior reforms and initiated widespread „cleansing measures“ and repression. Most notably, however, it lacked a clear vision for the future. The contributions in this volume show that the 1970s and 1980s were nevertheless not a time of complete stagnation. Efforts at restoration and modernization frequently existed simultaneously and counteractively. The essays discuss this contradictoriness and the often invisible dynamics of the normalization period exemplarily. A further key topic is the normalization’s echo in literature, remembrance culture, and historiography.

V monografii Mezi Východem a Západem autorka zkoumá krátké, avšak politicky i společensky významné období mezi koncem druhé světové války a převzetím moci komunisty v únoru 1948. Ony tři „dlouhé“ roky nepojímá jako jednoznačný zápas mezi demokracií a totalitarismem. Prostřednictvím diskurzivní analýzy prokazuje, že si v československé „lidové demokracii“ nekonkurovaly dva diametrálně odlišné společenské a politické modely. Na základě rozboru dobové publicistiky rekonstruuje kontroverze českých politických elit ohledně výkladu předválečné a válečné minulosti, přítomnosti i budoucnosti, resp. ohledně formování nového státního a politického pořádku. Velkou pozornost věnuje pojímání německé viny a vyrovnání se s českými a moravskými Němci v roce 1945. Protipól vůči německé otázce pak představuje Brennerovou analyzovaná debata o blízkosti, resp. o odstupu k sovětskému modelu, jež v publicistické rovině podléhala politické cenzuře i silné autocenzuře.
