Less than a year later, 23-year-old Alice Guy, the first female filmmaker in cinema history, made The Cabbage Fairy, a 60-second movie, for Léon Gaumont, and would go on to direct more than 300 films before 1922. Her life is a shadow history of early cinema, the chronicle of an art form coming into its own. A free and independent woman who rubbed shoulders with masters such as Georges Méliès and the Lumières, she was the first to define the professions of screenwriter and producer. She directed the first feminist satire, then the first sword-and-sandal epic, before crossing the Atlantic in 1907 to the United States and becoming the first woman to found her own production company. Guy died in 1969, excluded from the annals of film history. In 2011 Martin Scorsese honored this cinematic visionary, "forgotten by the industry she had helped create," describing her as "a filmmaker of rare sensitivity, with a remarkable poetic eye and an extraordinary feel for locations." Josephine Baker (1906-1975) was nineteen years old when she found herself in Paris for the first time in 1925. Overnight, the young American dancer became the idol of the Roaring Twenties, captivating Picasso, Cocteau, Le Corbusier, and Simenon. In the liberating atmosphere of the 1930s, Baker rose to fame as the first black star on the world stage, from London to Vienna, Alexandria to Buenos Aires. After World War II, and her time in the French Resistance, Baker devoted herself to the struggle against racial segregation, publicly battling the humiliations she had for so long suffered personally. She led by example, and over the course of the 1950s adopted twelve orphans of different ethnic backgrounds: a veritable Rainbow Tribe. A victim of racism throughout her life, Josephine Baker would sing of love and liberty until the day she died.

Alice Guy (1873–1968) war die erste Filmregisseurin der Welt, ebenso die erste Produzentin und Drehbuchautorin. Sie inszenierte und produzierte an die 500 Filme, agierte in einigen frühen davon auch in Nebenrollen. Bis 1907 war sie Produktionsleiterin der französischen Firma Gaumont, die von 1905 bis 1915 das größte Studio der Welt besaß. 1910 gründete sie in New York die Solax, ihr eigenes Studio, in dem mehr als 300 Filme aller Couleur inszeniert wurden. 1896 drehte Alice Guy mit »La Fée aux Choux« den vermutlich ersten Spielfilm der Filmgeschichte. 1906 realisierte sie die Großproduktion »La Vie du Christ« mit über dreihundert Statisten. Zwischen 1900 und 1906 inszenierte sie ca. 100 Phonoszenen und erwies sich damit überdies als Pionierin des Tonfilms. Sie gehörte zu den ersten, die mit Tricktechnik experimentierten, verwendete Split-Screens, Zeitraffer und Zeitlupe, Stopptrick, Doppelbelichtung und Rückwärtsbewegungen. Trotzdem wird Alice Guys Œuvre noch Jahrzehnte nach ihrem Tod von der Filmgeschichtsschreibung unterschlagen oder ihren männlichen Mitarbeitern zugeschrieben. Catel Muller und José-Louis Bocquet korrigieren in ihrer Comicbiografie diese Irrtümer und erinnern an die außergewöhnliche Filmemacherin, die den Bildern das Laufen lehrte.
