Co w tej książce jest prawdą, a co tworem wyobraźni pisarza? Czy rzeczywiście mamy do czynienia z autentycznym, odnalezionym w weneckiej lagunie opowiadaniem Henry’ego Jamesa, czy ze znakomicie podrobionym apokryfem? Powieść Maurensiga jest książką trzyplanową. Jest w niej historia odnalezionego, niewydanego nigdy utworu Jamesa i pracy bohatera nad uratowaniem – odtworzeniem – zniszczonego tekstu, jest „Anagalis”, właściwa nowela Jamesa (Maurensiga?) o miłości i szukaniu piękna (albo odwrotnie), jest wreszcie związany z nią fragment biografii amerykańskiego pisarza, jego związku z Konstancją Woolson. Wszystkie trzy – bardzo przemyślnie powiązane – dają niezwykle wciągającą opowieść, rozgrywającą się w samym sercu wiecznie pięknej Wenecji. Nell'agosto del 1939, Emil Ferenczi si trova sui monti Tatra, in Polonia, per fronteggiare l'imminente invasione nazista come sottufficiale dei Cacciatori Ungheresi. Nel corso di lunghe marce attraverso una natura selvaggia e ostile, all'apprensione per la concreta minaccia del nemico si intrecciano, in un oscuro crescendo, atavici timori superstiziosi. Alla loro origine, una serie di scomparse e delitti che sono forse l'opera di una bestia spaventosa... La creatura, però, sembra avere i tratti del margravio di quelle terre, Vukovlad. In un clima sempre più allucinato, dove sole e neve si susseguono, per poi cedere il posto a una pioggia battente, il confine fra gli opposti si confonde, la bestia si fa uomo e, alla luce della luna piena, il Male prende forma.
