The topic “Politics, Civil Society and Participation” addresses how media and communication practices within European cultures adapt to their environments. This volume features contributions from the 2015 European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School, organized in collaboration with the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) and 21 partner universities at the University of Bremen's ZeMKI. The chapters are organized into four sections: “Policies and politics of communication,” “Civil participation in and through the media,” “Media representations and usages,” and “On methods.” The summer school unites highly qualified doctoral students with senior researchers and professors from various European countries. Over fourteen days, the program aims to foster innovative learning at the doctoral level, enhancing the quality of dissertation projects through intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange and networking. The approach goes beyond traditional postgraduate teaching methods, incorporating group-centered and individualized strategies, including discussions of doctoral projects, peer feedback, and collaborative book production.
