Létat se učil na Farmanu Longhorn a ihed projevil značné nadání - na první sólový let mohl odstartovat po pouhé půldruhé hodině strávené ve vzduchu s instruktorem. Výcvik pak pokračoval s letouny Avro 504, BE-2 a FE-2.
