The biblical doctrine of election and the fact that you are elected to be on God's team is arguable the most humbling teaching in all of scripture. At the core of the doctrine of election, is man's or human's complete inability to elect or chose a holy God for salvation. Man, in his natural state, lacks the desire, power or ability to exercise their free will. The human will is not really free but is completely and wholly in bondage and bound to sin. The human will is dead, like a dead corps. That is why Jesus so eloquently said in John 8:36 that "if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed".
