    • Bar Hebräus wurde 1225 / 1226 in Melitene am Euphrat geboren, als die Syrisch-Orthodoxe Kirche eine letzte große Blütezeit erlebte. Da er auf mehreren Gebieten gleichzeitig aktiv war und Werke von bleibendem Wert schuf, gehört er zur Kategorie der Universalgelehrten. Er verfasste 30 Bücher auf Syrisch oder Arabisch. In der letzten Zeit seines reichen Lebens schrieb er das Buch der ergötzlichen Erzählungen, ein Unikum in der syrischen Literatur. Hier liegt eine umfassende Sammlung aus dem 13. Jahrhundert vor, zu der es in dieser Hinsicht kein auch nur annähernd gleichwertiges Gegenstück in den zeitgenössischen europäischen Literaturen gibt. Als Quelle dienten ihm mittelbar oder unmittelbar arabische Werke, aber auch die Apophthegmata Patrum, die dem koptischen Mönchtum entstammen.
