As a youth, Marpa was inspired to travel to India to study the Buddhist teachings, for at that time in Tibet, Buddhism has waned considerably through ruthless suppression by an evil king. The author paints a vivid picture of Marpa's three journeys to India: precarious mountain passes, desolate plains teeming with bandits, greedy customs-tax collectors. Marpa endured many hardships, but nothing to compare with the trials that ensued with his guru Nâropa and other teachers. Yet Marpa succeeded in mastering the tantric teachings, translating and bringing them to Tibet, and establishing the Practice Lineage of the Kagyüs, which continues to this day.

Velký jogín a básník Milarepa (1040–1123) je jedním z nejslavnějších učitelů tibetského buddhismu. Je zároveň jedním z otců zakladatelů tibetské buddhistické tradice Kagjü. Byl však také velmi důležitou postavou pro všechny tibetské linie a školy. V dětství zažil strádání a bídu poté, co jej, jeho matku a sestru připravili strýc a teta o veškeré dědictví. Milarepa byl příliš mladý na to, aby si zjednal spravedlnost mečem, a proto se na žádost matky naučil černé magii, kterou usmrtil 35 lidí. Když pochopil, že dojmy, které těmito činy nahromadil, musí v jeho mysli dozrát jako hluboké utrpení, objevila se v něm hluboká touha vydat se cestou duchovního rozvoje. Jeho vytrvalost, neústupnost a oddanost svému učiteli Marpovi jsou dodnes příkladem pro všechny praktikující Diamantové cesty (tib. dordže thegpa, skt. vadžrajána). Po dosažení osvícení učil formou unikátních písní plných hloubky, humoru a přírodních krás.
