The Old Trapper's Cabin: An Adventure Story
    • The Old Trapper’s Cabin is one of a series of adventure stories set on the edge of the wilderness in northern Minnesota. The story follows four brothers and their father on a perilous deer hunting trip that takes them deep into the frozen forests and swamps that were once home to rugged frontiersmen and immigrant farmers. On the northern edge of where the virgin forests meets the western plains of America, an old cabin stands in an overgrown field on what now has become state land. The fact that the cabin still stands is only due to the stubborn support of its stone chimney, valiantly fighting the forces of nature and time. The history of the land and the old cabin are only known through local folklore. With lives at stake, the old cabin turns out to play a pivotal role in the plight of the family of hunters as they struggle to survive a heavy winter storm bearing down on them out of the northeast.

Ravens of the Norse is one of a series of adventure stories set on the edge of the wilderness in northern Minnesota. The story follows two brothers and their widowed father on a coming-of-age deer hunting trip in the big woods of northern Minnesota. Tristan, the youngest of the two brothers, is 12 years old and eager to show his father and older brother Glenn that he is a true outdoorsman. To do so, he is forced to battle the forces of nature in the form of an Alberta Clipper bearing down on them from the northwest. Unbeknownst to him, he is also battling supernatural forces in the form of Odin, the old Norse deity. Burdened by asthma and his youthful enthusiasm for the hunt, Tristan still has a great deal to learn to be able to survive the storm on his own, let alone the supernatural forces at work. Their aging father, an English teacher struggling to raise his boys on his own, tries his best to watch over Tristan and teach him the lessons only the wilderness can provide. Norse mythology and religion intervene as Odin examines their character from his unique perspective. He relies on his shaman-like ravens Hugin and Munin and his wolves Geri and Freki to decide whether any of the hunting party are worthy of joining him in Valhalla that perilous night.

The Greenhorn Diary is one of a series of adventure stories set on the edge of the wilderness in northern Minnesota. The story follows the coming-of-age excitement of the first deer hunting trip of Robbie Ericson, together with his brothers Paul and Johnny, as revealed through a mysterious diary he has left behind. The origin of the diary is a riddle until Johnny remembers why his eccentric brother wrote the diary in the first place. As the tale unfolds, the reason why the diary exists and yet was never turned in to his teacher Sister Gilbert becomes increasingly apparent. The deer hunting trip creates the ideal battlefield for the younger version of Robbie to grapple with the mental concepts of time and space, while at the same time going through the moral confusion associated with the physical changes he is encountering as he matures. Ultimately, the lifelong impact of adolescent guilt and shame on Robbie, together with his unique thoughts on time and space, are explored and tenderly addressed through the prism of both literature and brotherhood.

Catfish Island is one of a series of adventure stories set on the edge of the wilderness in northern Minnesota. The story follows two older brothers and their two younger sisters who take an overnight camping trip to a river island to catfish together after their father has left them. The island is not only the best catfishing spot on the river for miles but is also steeped in legend regarding the Ojibwe tribes that occupied the area long before the first white settlers descended on the Red River Valley of northern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. The roots of the Ojibwe legend trace back to the Old Crossing Treaty of 1863 that ceded over 11 million acres of land to the U.S. government at a location just downriver from the island. The brothers and sisters are together about to find out whether the spooky stories are merely folklore or embody an actual spiritual presence on Catfish Island based upon the historical events that happened 150 years ago.
