The Mask, is an unconventional autobiography that reads more like a novel. It begins with a reading from a psychic that becomes the catalyst for writing and revealing a story, which weaves through a stolen childhood, the crumbling of a marriage, a healing journey that, in turn, leads into past lives, future lives, and touches on the mystical and magical from which most of us disconnect in childhood. Sela-Smith's story is itself a mask for a deeper story of the masks all of us wear to feel safe, to be accepted, or to find love; far too often, we come to believe that we are the mask that we wear. Sometime in life, we notice that who we think we are feels false and empty, causing us to feel as if something important is missing. Through her story, Sela-Smith supports the reader in finding his or her own real self.
