Né en Bohême, Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) fait le périple de tout jeune artiste d'Europe centrale : Vienne, Munich, puis Paris, en 1890. Inscrit à l'académie Julian, il mène une vie de peintre désargenté, travaillant ici ou là comme graphiste pour des imprimeurs. Soudain, en 1897, la chance fait qu'un projet d'affiche pour Sarah Bernhardt enthousiasme la grande actrice. Bientôt, tous les murs de Paris révèlent Mucha avec d'autres affiches, pour du champagne ou des biscuits. Ainsi, avec Mucha, l'Art Nouveau triomphe. Le formidable tremplin que fut l'Exposition universelle de 1900 donnait à Mucha une stature internationale. La typographie des journaux, des livres et des emballages commerciaux aussi bien que la mode féminine, les bijoux, le mobilier, la décoration intérieure et d'innombrables objets usuels témoignaient de la naissance d'un style original. Porté par le succès, Mucha se rendit en Amérique, où il décida bientôt de se consacrer à un projet auquel il rêvait depuis longtemps : la réalisation d'une série de grands tableaux célébrant L'Épopée slave. Quand la victoire de 1918 rendit la Tchécoslovaquie indépendante, Alphonse Mucha retourna à Prague, mais ne put achever son dessein avant sa mort.
