Richard Hildreth fut un journaliste, auteur et historien américain. Il est surtout connu pour son ouvrage en six volumes, Histoire des États-Unis d'Amérique, couvrant la période de 1497 à 1821 et publié entre 1840 et 1853. Les historiens la considèrent comme une histoire politique très précise de la première République, bien qu'elle présente un fort biais en faveur du Parti Fédéraliste et de l'abolition de l'esclavage.
