These stories were written one a day throughout January 2013. They were originally published on a blog called Gill's January Stones. Do they have a theme? Not really, though the idea of 'stones' is one of turning them over slowly on the beach until we find the right one.
Kaleem Malkendy is different – and, on Terrestra, different is no way to be.Everything about Kaleem marks him out from the rest: the blond hair and dark skin, the humble cave where he lives and the fact that he doesn’t know his father. He’s used to unwelcome attention, but even so, he’d feel better if some strange old man didn’t keep following him around. Then the man introduces himself and begins to explain the Babel Prophecy – and everything in Kaleem’s life changes forever.
There are 140 stories, each 140 words long. Each story was inspired by the first picture I saw when I opened my Twitter feed on that day. The dates are preserved and give an indication of how long it has taken to produce this and turn it into a book. These stories are created to be varied, thought-provoking, laughter-producing and tear-jerking. This anthology of women's fiction, this collection of very short stories, some might say a flash collection, is thought-provoking and each story is based upon a tweet. Except that each piece is 140 words long and not 140 characters. They were collected over three years and edited for another nine months.
Kaleem has given up the love of his life in order to protect her. He now lives and works on Zandra. A sudden landquake, not known on the planet for many years, destroys many of the forests his father has planted to bring life back to the planet. The new relationship Kaleem has helped to establish between the Terrestrans and the Zandrians is also under threat. A third party gets involved and Kaleem has to use all of his diplomatic skills to keep everything on track. Mistakes cost him dearly and he looks set to lose Rozia for a second time. The Babel Tower mystery, others mysteries and sadness plague him. Can he find a way through to fulfil his role as the Peace Child?
Käthe wants to be a scientist. She sees herself as more than a housewife and a mother. And she is in her own eyes definitely not Jewish. Life in Nazi Germany sees it another way however. She has to give up a promising career and her national identity. She has to leave the home she has built up for her husband and daughter. But she is not afraid of challenges. She enlists the help of a respected professor to help her fulfil her ambition, she learns how to use a gun and how to drive a car. But what will she do when she finds herself fact to face with the Führer or, indeed, with the challenges of modern life? Face to Face with the Führer is the fourth novel in Gill James' Schellberg cycle.
