A collection of 30 projects from all areas, this richly illustrated book shows a representative cross-section offering insights into many-sided production of contemporary French interior design. The individual projects are introduced and elucidated with the help of large-scaled photos and brief description as well as designs, drawing and artistic details.

Bold and unconventional ideas are called for if the intention is to steer the debate on temporary accommodation for refugees in a new direction offering high-quality solutions. From eccentric experiments all the way to projects which have already been realised, international design teams present their work between the twin poles of unconventional developments and life-saving shelters in this compilation of case studies, Container and Modular Buildings. Not all of these are applicable to the current refugee crisis, since that which digital nomads find hip constitutes harsh reality for others. Yet alongside playful follies, we can find miniature architectural structures for the homeless as well as outpatient medical stations which offer a response to social problems and space shortages. The photographic material puts forward ideas as to how more can be done than the mere assembling of containers.

„Contemporary Architecture. Made in Germany“ präsentiert 28 international tätige Architekturbüros aus Deutschland und zeigt über 120 Projekte in mehr als 30 Ländern. Herausgegeben vom Netzwerk Architekturexport (NAX) der Bundesarchitektenkammer (BAK), bietet das Buch einen repräsentativen Überblick exporterfahrener Architekten und dient als Bilanz für im Ausland tätige Büros. Es verdeutlicht das Konzept von Architektur „Made in Germany“, bei dem Bauprojekte von der Entwurfsphase bis zur Schlüsselübergabe umfassend betreut werden. Diese enge Zusammenarbeit mit Ingenieuren und Handwerkern ermöglicht es den Architekten, die Verantwortung für komplexe Aufgaben in einer Hand zu halten, was ihnen einen Wettbewerbsvorteil gegenüber internationalen Büros verschafft. Der thematische Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Herausforderungen des modernen globalen Lebens, die je nach Region unterschiedlich sind, etwa in Russland, China oder der arabischen Welt. Die Themen „Metropolis: Developing Urban Structures“, „Inventing the House of Tomorrow: Sustainability and Technology“ sowie „Places for the Public: Communication, Health, Leisure“ fokussieren das Leben und Arbeiten im urbanen Kontext und präsentieren bereits angewandte Lösungsmöglichkeiten. Der Band begleitet eine Wanderausstellung, die am 12. Oktober 2016 in Beijing eröffnet wurde. NAX wurde 2002 gegründet, um internationale Auftraggeber mit deutschen Architekturbüros zu vernetzen.

Mutige und unkonventionelle Ideen sind gefragt, will man die Debatte über temporäre Unterkünfte für Flüchtlinge mit gestalterisch hochwertigen Lösungen in eine neue Richtung lenken. In der Beispielsammlung „Container- und Modulbauten“ präsentieren internationale Designteams ihre Arbeiten im Spannungsfeld zwischen unkonventionellen Behausungen und lebensrettenden Schutzbauten, von ausgefallenen Experimenten bis hin zu realisierten Projekten. Nicht alles davon ist auf die aktuelle Flüchtlingskrise anwendbar, denn was für digitale Nomaden hip ist, ist für andere Menschen harte Realität. Doch neben den spielerischen Fantastereien finden sich auch Kleinstarchitekturen für Obdachlose oder ambulante medizinische Stationen, die auf soziale Probleme und Platzmangel reagieren.
