Nicht nur so schwierige Fälle wie «Fisches Nachtgesang» bewältigt Knight souverän und mit bestechender Eleganz, er übersetzt gar Unübersetzbares _ zum Beispiel, indem er den «Lämmergeier» bzw. das «Geierlamm» in einen «Chicken Hawk» bzw. ein «Hawken Chick» verwandelt _ und beweist damit messerscharf, dass eben doch «sein kann, was nicht sein darf».In seinem Nachwort schildert der Übersetzer, wie er dazu kam, sich an die Übertragung von Morgensterns Gedichten zu machen. Und so, wie in den Galgenliedern eine «Schildkrökröte» («Tortoitoise») auftritt, skizziert der Herausgeber Niklaus Peter in seinem «Nachnachwort» die faszinierende Biographie Max Knights.
