    Byrd Baylor a toujours vécu dans le Sud-Ouest, principalement dans le sud de l'Arizona, près de la frontière mexicaine. Elle se sent chez elle parmi les falaises, les mesas, les rochers et les vastes ciels du désert du Sud-Ouest. Les tempêtes du désert la réconfortent. Le peuple Tohono O’odham, anciennement connu sous le nom de Papago, sont ses voisins et ses amis proches. Elle a concentré bon nombre de ses écrits sur le paysage, les peuples et les valeurs de cette région. À travers ses livres de poésie en prose rythmée, principalement destinés aux enfants, elle célèbre la beauté de la nature et son propre sentiment de rapport avec elle. Ses livres sont remplis des lieux et des gens qu'elle connaît. Elle considère ces livres comme ses propres chansons d'amour privées pour l'endroit qu'elle appelle sa maison.
