Sans escorte et muni d'un pécule dérisoire, il sillonne l'Arabie à la recherche de sites bibliques ou de formations géologiques remarquables, et dans cette région d'islam " fanatique " il refuse de se faire passer pour un musulman, au péril de sa vie. Son récit, paru en 1888, fut longtemps le livre de chevet de Lawrence d'Arabie et reste considéré comme un chef-d'œuvre de la littérature de voyage.
