    • Established on routes into Exeter in the 1750s, turnpikes soon extended across the county. While most toll-houses were rendered, the local shale stone can be seen at Yealmbridge, with red sandstone examples at Cheriton Cross and Venn Bridge.

    • The countyâ€s oldest toll-house is a thatched building in Newton Poppleford that has been dated to about 1758. The areaâ€s shale stone can be seen unrendered at Yeo Vale, with Goodleigh Road a good example of the gothick windows of the 19th century.
