Albert S. Gatschet

    Albert Gatschet fut un philologue et ethnologue distingué dont l'œuvre de toute une vie s'est concentrée sur l'étude des langues amérindiennes. Faisant preuve d'une remarquable aptitude linguistique dès son plus jeune âge, ses études universitaires l'ont conduit aux Universités de Berne et de Berlin. Son premier ouvrage sur l'étymologie des noms de lieux suisses demeure une référence standard. La passion de Gatschet pour la langue l'a finalement conduit aux États-Unis, où il est devenu un pionnier dans la recherche des langues autochtones américaines, donnant lieu à des publications importantes sur les peuples Karankawa et Klamath. Profond et vaste dans ses connaissances, et inspiré par Humboldt, il a laissé une marque indélébile dans son domaine.
