Londinium was founded by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago, shortly before AD 50. Roman London was built on a greenfield site which is now occupied by the City of London and north Southwark. The early frontier town was an immediate success and was occupied for almost four centuries.
Originally published in 1915 to raise funds to support transport workers and their families during WW1. Charles Pears was a well know artist producing numerous posters for London Underground. Pears was also an Official War Artist during both WW1 and WW2.
