    Bodmer prônait une esthétique ancrée dans l'imagination créatrice de l'artiste et la représentation du merveilleux, s'opposant délibérément aux courants littéraires de son époque. Il est célébré comme un redécouvreur de la poésie médiévale allemande et un traducteur important d'Homère et de Milton. Son œuvre a profondément influencé la littérature et la pensée allemandes.

      Die beiden Zürcher Gelehrten und Publizisten Johann Jakob Bodmer und Johann Jakob Breitinger entwickelten um 1740 zusammen und im Streit mit dem Leipziger Johann Christoph Gottsched die Grundlagen einer deutschen Literaturkritik und Literaturwissenschaft. Den Schweizern ging es dabei weniger um den moralischen Nutzen der Literatur als um ihre Freiheit, Freiheit von der Regelpoetik und Freiheit zu schöpferischer Einbildungskraft jenseits von Vernunft-Realismus.
