In diesem Buch von 1900 betont Böhtlingk die zentrale Rolle der Eisenbahn für die Entwicklung Deutschlands und ihre Bedeutung für die Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft.

Der Rastatter Gesandtenmord an zwei französische Diplomaten in der Nacht des 29. April 1799 beendete die Friedensbemühungen zwischen Frankreich und Österreich. Der Historiker Arthur Heinrich Böhtlingk (1849–1929) rekapituliert in seiner Arbeit aus dem Jahr 1883 die früheren Thesen zum Tathergang und stellt eine eigene »verwegene Hypothese« (S. 27) auf, die Napoleon Bonaparte ins Zentrum des Mordkomplottes rückt. Bis heute konnte der Gesandtenmord allerdings nicht aufgeklärt werden.

In seiner Studie aus dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert untersucht Arthur Böhtlingk, welchen Einfluss das Werk Shakespeares auf den Werdegang und das Schreiben Friedrich Schillers hatte. „… so ist Schiller schon als heranwachsender Jüngling, vor jeder literarischen Bedeutung, ein begeisterter Jünger Shakespeares. Durch die übermächtige Einwirkung des großen Briten zum Dramatiker geworden, wird er ihm vom Anfang bis zu Ende entscheidender Anreger und höchstes Vorbild bleiben: wie bei den Räubern, seinem Erstling, so wieder bei dem Tell, seinem letzten, zur Vollendung geformten Bühnenwerke.
