Gabe Montesanti grew up queer in a conservative Catholic family in the Midwest, where she learned to prioritize strength over vulnerability. In this abusive environment, she developed a severe eating disorder, struggled with self-trust, and lived in fear. As she enters graduate school, she resolves to leave her traumatic past behind and embrace her body. Joining Arch Rival Roller Derby in St. Louis, she discovers a community that celebrates roughness and scars, finding safety and belonging in its queer-friendly atmosphere filled with tattoos, glitter, and camp. Adopting the derby name Joan of Spark, she channels the fierce spirit of Joan of Arc, symbolizing her departure from childhood baggage. However, a catastrophic injury forces Gabe to confront her unresolved trauma. The physicality of roller derby starkly reflects the emotional violence of her upbringing, complicating her recovery. As she navigates the arduous path to physical healing, she also faces the painful task of addressing her emotional wounds. Ultimately, Gabe must confront her past and determine if she can embody the spirit of Joan of Spark off the track, as she skates toward a bolder, truer future.
