The present volume aims at a comparative study of the processes of reception, rewriting and interpretation between canonical and apocryphal texts in early Jewish and early Christian literature. A closer look at the respective developments in both corpora of literature can open up new perspectives for understanding the developments and changes between texts that were already considered authoritative, and their reception in new, 'parabiblical' or 'apocryphal' compositions. The way of reception may also influence the perspective on canonical texts. The range of texts considered includes the LXX, Targumim and Pesharim, books such as Jubilees, the Genesis Apocryphon, the Gospel of Thomas, and Apocryphal Acts, traditions about Esther, Ezra, Manasseh, Peter and Paul, depictions of hell from Enoch to the Apocalypse of Paul, and the development of miracle stories.

The articles discuss various aspects of Jewish identity in the Greco-Roman period. Was there a common 'Jewish' identity, and how could it be defined? How could different groups develop and maintain their identity within the challenge of Hellenistic and early Roman culture? What about the images of 'others'? How could some of those 'others' adopt a Jewish lifestyle or identity, whereas others, abandoned their inherited identity? Among the questions discussed are the translation of Ioudaios, Jewish and universal identity in Philo, the status of women and their conversion to Judaism, the participation of non-Jews in the temple cult, the practice of Emperor worship in Judaea, and the image of Egypt and the Nile as 'others' in Philo. Two articles enter the debate whether Jewish identity had an ongoing influence within early Christianity, in Paul and in the rules known as the Apostolic Decree.

The present book is a reworked and expanded version of the lectures I was invited to present in January 2018 in the distinguished series of the Yale Shaffer Lectures at Yale Divinity School--Preface.

The articles collected here present the fruits of 25 years of scholarship on Qumran and the New Testament. The author situates the New Testament within the pluralistic context of Second Temple Judaism, presents detailed overviews on the discoveries from Qumran, the source value of the ancient texts on the Essenes, the interpretation of the archaeological site, the various forms of dualism within the texts, the development of apocalyptic thought, Qumran meals, and scriptural authority in the Scrolls. He evaluates the various patterns of relating Jesus and the apostles to the Scrolls or the Qumran community, presents methodological reflections on comparisons and detailed surveys of the most important insights from the Qumran discoveries for the understanding of Jesus, Paul, and the Fourth Gospel. This volume demonstrates how the discovery of the Scrolls has influenced and changed New Testament scholarship.

Der vorliegende Sammelband thematisiert in einem weiten historischen Rahmen die rechtliche und soziale Stellung und Rolle von Frauen im antiken Judentum, im frühen Christentum und in der griechisch-römischen Welt. Herangezogen werden dokumentarische Texte aus Ägypten und der Judäischen Wüste, ausgewählte Texte vom Toten Meer sowie Zeugnisse aus der jüdisch-hellenistischen, frühchristlichen und rabbinischen Überlieferung. Thematisiert werden Fragen der liturgischen und gottesdienstlichen Funktion von Frauen, ihre rechtliche Stellung im Blick auf Ehe und Besitz, Frauenfrömmigkeit und Reinheitspraxis, konkrete Probleme des Alltagslebens, aber auch narrative Rollenbilder und Typisierungen. Die enge Verknüpfung historischer Quellenarbeit mit Ansätzen der Genderforschung dient dabei der präziseren Wahrnehmung der Konstruktion von Frauenbildern und ihrer Wirksamkeit in den verschiedenen antiken Kontexten.

Der Band bietet eine breite Analyse und Reflexion der Autorschaftskonzepte und Autorisierungsstrategien in frühjüdischen und frühchristlichen apokalyptischen Texten. Dabei wird zunächst grundlegend nach der Bedeutung von Autorschaft und Autorisierungskonzepten in der Literaturwissenschaft gefragt, und die breite Vielfalt an Vorstellungen von Autorschaft in der griechisch-römischen Antike erhoben. Einzelbeiträge analysieren die Konstruktion von Autorschaft von den biblischen Prophetenbüchern über die Anfänge der jüdischen Apokalyptik in der Henochliteratur und im Danielbuch, das 4. Esra- und das 2. Baruchbuch und die Jakobsleiter bis in die rabbinische Literatur. Ein zweiter Hauptteil erörtert die Phänomene der Autorisierung und Autorschaftskonstruktion in christlichen Apokalypsen von der Johannesapokalypse und der Petrusapokalypse bis zur lateinischen Paulusapokalypse. Eine rezeptionsgeschichtliche Studie zur späten Nachwirkung der Apokalyptik in Dantes Göttlicher Komödie schließt den Band ab.

Gewisse frühjüdische und neutestamentliche Texte beschreiben eine Verbindung der himmlischen und irdischen Gemeinde im Gottesdienst oder setzen diese voraus. Exegetisch erlangte das Thema insbesondere durch die Textfunde von Qumran Aufmerksamkeit. Die Thematik ist aber auch relevant für das ökumenische Gespräch mit den östlich-orthodoxen Kirchen, in deren Liturgien gerade die Teilnahme der himmlischen Welt am irdischen Gottesdienst eine herausragende Rolle spielt. Systematisch spielte die Fragestellung zudem im Werk des katholischen Theologen Erik Peterson und seiner Diskussion mit Karl Barth eine Rolle. Der vorliegende Sammelband dokumentiert die Beiträge einer Tagung an der Theologische Fakultät der Universität Zürich zur Beziehung von Gottesdienst und Engeln in antik-jüdischer, rabbinischer, neutestamentlicher, frühchristlicher, liturgiegeschichtlicher und systematischer Perspektive.
