John Furniss Livres

After his aunt Margaret Furniss died in 1996, John Furniss found a box of letters chronicling her life of dedication to the Scout movement. They have enabled him to piece together the story of a woman who devoted more than 70 years of her life to the Scouts, becoming an Akela Leader in 1948, being awarded the Silver Wolf award in 1964 for her services, and becoming Assistant District Commissioner for Wolf Cubs for Northamptonshire. Even in retirement Margaret continued to work tirelessly for the movement almost until the end of her eventful life.

"The Sight of Hell" was written "for children and young persons" by the Rev. John Furniss in 1861, however this reprint is from an 1874 publication. The images of Hell have all been added. This edition also includes text from late nineteenth-century reviews of the book.

Retired dentist John Furniss takes a light-hearted look back at a long and varied career during which he helped to developperiodontal care for children, including those with special needs, played a role in the introduction of fluoridation and expanded dental health education and played a national role in dental vocational training. It wasn't all plain sailing - he was interrupted by adventures on the sports field (one of which left his leg in plaster for four months), a little incident where a dropped drawer led to the dentures of six patients being irretrievably mixed up, and a series of obstacles to his long campaign to improve dental health in the young and disadvantaged.

The narrative follows John Furniss and his friends as they prioritize climbing adventures over their daily responsibilities. Their journey begins in the UK, exploring the peaks of England, Wales, and Scotland, before transitioning to the more demanding terrains of the Austrian and German Alps. Throughout their escapades, they accumulate an impressive climbing total, surpassing the height of Mount Everest by over thirteen times, showcasing their passion for mountaineering and the thrill of adventure.

The Blind Woodsman is an inspiring and motivational autobiography about a man who finds true joy after struggling with depression, drug addiction, anxiety, financial despair and a failed suicide attempt at the age of 16. Despite being blind, John is now a highly skilled woodworker creating incredible pieces of art in complete darkness.
