Tato kniha je ve skutečnosti přepisem exercicií (živého slova), které dával v postní době r. 1976 papeži Pavlu VI. tehdejší krakovský arcibiskup Karol Wojtyła. Z textu je znát, že autorem je pastýř jednoho z nejdůležitějších stolců Polska, které se tehdy potýkalo s komunistickou diktaturou. O tom vypovídá už příznačné téma: „Znamení odporu". znameni-odporu-men.jpgTento titul exercicií je ohlasem Simeonova proroctví o novorozeném Ježíši Kristu: „On je určen.... jako znamení, kterému se bude odporovat." (Lk 2,34) Toto proroctví se dle slov Wojtyły naplnilo nejen na Kristu v jeho době, nýbrž i na jeho církvi ve všech dobách a zvláště v té dnešní (ze strany komunismu...). Na začátku exercicií vytyčil exercitátor tento cíl: Světlo, kterým je Kristus, „kéž nás posílí a uschopní, abychom přijali a milovali celou pravdu Kristovu, abychom ji milovali tím víc, čím víc jí svět odporuje!"
