Chen Ming (1908-1996) war Professor für zeitgenössische europäische Geschichte. Er ist ab 1951 bis 1978 in China als Intellektueller unter der kommunistischen Regierung in Ungnade gefallen. Dieses Buch ist seine Autobiografie und bietet einen sehr anschaulichen Einblick in die menschenverachtende Vorgehensweise der chinesischen kommunistischen Partei von 1949 bis in die 1980er- Jahre des vergangenen Jahrhunderts. “Ich wurde in eine arme Familie hineingeboren, machte tausend tragische Erfahrungen, die Hälfte meines Lebens war schon vergangen, als ein neues China entstand. Ich hoffte, dass die zweite Hälfte meines Lebens sanfter sein würde und ich friedlich meine Tage mit dem Unterrichten der Geschichte der Gegenwart verstreichen lassen konnte. Aber ich war unter keinem guten Stern geboren. Die unheilvolle Periode meines Lebens, die folgte, sollte mehr als 30 Jahre andauern.“ Im Jahre 1988 begegnete Camille Loivier, die damals eine junge französische Studentin in China war, Professor Chen Ming. Während den folgenden zwei Jahren sahen sie sich einmal pro Woche. Der alte Mann machte sich daran, seine Memoiren aufzuschreiben. Er vertraute ihr das Manuskript an, welches im China der Gegenwart nicht veröffentlich werden kann, mit dem Auftrag, es zu übersetzen. Chen Ming starb 1996. Er hinterlässt ein außergewöhnliches Zeugnis über den chinesischen „Gulag“.
