This work explores the New Testament's development as a Greco-Roman legal document, specifically a 'testament.' It delves into the historical and cultural contexts that shaped its formation, highlighting the legal frameworks and conventions of the time. By analyzing the New Testament through this lens, the book offers fresh insights into its structure, purpose, and significance within early Christian communities.
Focusing on the logistical challenges of integrating a heavy brigade with a light infantry division, this monograph explores historical precedents to highlight the necessity of such a combined arms approach. It emphasizes the importance of ammunition, fuel, and maintenance as key sustainment functions. By analyzing past successful examples, the work evaluates the current US Army logistical system's capability to support this integration. The findings suggest that, despite marginal physical support, innovative logistical procedures and a commitment to learning from history can enable effective force mix support.
The examination of military operations in coalition warfare emphasizes the necessity for commanders to align military strategies with political objectives, especially under limited resources and constraints. The Korean War serves as a case study, revealing tensions between US and ROK goals and highlighting General MacArthur's misinterpretation of limited war principles. The analysis underscores the importance of a harmonious relationship between military and political leaders to avoid failures in both spheres, advocating for a clear understanding of their interconnected roles.
Renaissance sources of polyphonic music not only convey a rich repertoire of some of the most impressive music ever written. From the point of view of their layout or mise-en-page, they are also amongst the most complex books of their time. They typically combine verbal text, musical notation and other graphic devices, and the different voice parts are arranged to be read separately by the performers, yet to be performed simultaneously. As an integral part of the production and use of these books, the mise-en-page thus provides crucial information for the understanding of the repertoire that is transmitted through them. The present volume combines a number of studies resulting from a research project funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) into this question, combining the examination of a number of overarching themes (e.g. luxury codices, printed polyphony, music theory books, illumination) with case studies of individual sources.
This volume deals with different aspects of the creation and use of multilingual corpora. The term 'multilingual corpus' is understood in a comprehensive sense, meaning any systematic collection of empirical language data enabling linguists to carry out analyses of multilingual individuals, multilingual societies or multilingual communication. The individual contributions are thus concerned with a variety of spoken and written corpora ranging from learner and attrition corpora, language contact corpora and interpreting corpora to comparable and parallel corpora. The overarching aim of the volume is first to take stock of the variety of existing multilingual corpora, documenting possible corpus designs and uses, second to discuss methodological and technological challenges in the creation and analysis of multilingual corpora, and third to provide examples of linguistic analyses that were carried out on the basis of multilingual corpora.
Thomas Schmidt (born 1943) has constructed a series of oval paintings and works on paper that accentuate the hips, thighs, feet, breasts and even the underwear of women, exaggeratedly operating from a male perspective. This publication presents the series.
